Yellow Flowers

Murten(German) or Morat (French) is a small medieval town in the canton of Fribourg. Its most dominant feature is the castle wall that encircles it. Situated on the cultural and language border of French and German (referred to as the Roestigraben), the majority of its inhabitants are bilingual. It has picturesque alleyways and a lovely lakeside promenade.

What do I love about this place? It is so quaint that you feel you have stepped back in time until you notice the clothes people are wearing and the shop windows. The nearby Mont Vully with its vineyards and its slopes with views to the Jura mountains, add to its magnificence. Every January, there is a splendid light festival which will be moved to March in 2021.

Important to know

To make a beautiful day trip out of it, take a train to Neuchâtel and from there go by boat to Murten.
