| Castles |
There are four castles near the town, however only three are open to the public: The best is Schloss Kyburg: approximately 7km south of Winterthur. This castle dates from the tenth and eleventh centuries; it’s majestically sited on a hilltop above the Töss river. The castle plays host in early August to a week of chamber music. Schloss Mörsburg is 6km northeast of the Town, near Stadel. It is only accessible by car (via Sulz) and has a lovely Romanesque chapel and excavated ramparts. The thirteenth-century castle also contains a museum of the Historical Society of Winterthur, with ceramics, handicrafts and weapons on show. Schloss Hegi: is 3km east of the Town, but is less engaging; it is more of a moated mansion than a castle and dates from the fifteenth century and has much of its interior preserved. Schloss Wülflingen: is a stout sixteenth-century country house 4km northwest of the Town and is now a conference center and traditional restaurant. | |
